Born in London in 1990, Cressida studied through her teens at the Junior Royal Academy of Music, going on to a Classics degree and choral scholarship at Cambridge, where she trained under Tim Brown, performed with Sir Andrew Davis, Edward Gardiner and the late great Sir David Willcocks, and started her professional career while still a student. After graduating, she joined among others Vox Luminis, Polyphony, EXAUDI, Balthasar-Neumann-Chor, the Swedish Radio Choir, the BBC Singers and the Monteverdi Choir, developing an enduring love both of chamber ensembles and of singing internationally.
As a soloist, after some years focussed on opera she added oratorio, enjoying Fauré with John Rutter at King’s College, Cambridge, Bach on the continent, and Handel across the cathedrals and minsters of northern England. Since 2015, tours have taken her from Europe and the USA to Taiwan, Mexico, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Argentina, Israel and Colombia, and 2019 brought her St Matthew Passion debut in South Korea. There in 2022 she won the Jury Prize in the Daegu International Vocal Competition, having reached the semi-finals of the London Handel Competition and Concours Georges Enesco, and won the Basel Competition’s Opera Prize. She returns yearly to the Netherlands for Bach’s Passions; with the Freiburger Barockorchester she recently sang Israel in Egypt and Messiah under René Jacobs and Trevor Pinnock, and visited Switzerland for Carmina Burana at Tonhalle Zürich under Paavo Järvi.
Recordings and broadcasts include Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb and Hymn to St Cecilia, Lili Boulanger’s Soir sur la plaine, Vox Luminis’ 2021 Biber: Requiem, the world premiere recording of Lera Auerbach’s 72 Angels, and Handel’s Dixit Dominus at the Aldeburgh Festival. In opera, she increasingly enjoys dramatic roles, such as Weber’s Agathe, Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, and Wagner’s Elisabeth, Elsa and Sieglinde.
This year and next, she is especially looking forward to the St John Passion at Norwich Cathedral, concerts with EXAUDI at Wigmore Hall and Kings Place, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in London, and her tenth international tour of the Matthew Passion.
